Veridis has an open position for an experienced business developer to scout market opportunities, define the market- and customer- propositions, and realise business deals. Your core job is developing new partnerships and potential customer relations across the waste-to-product value chain and validating product use case scenarios.

 

Responsibilities:

We work closely with pilot partners/clients to build innovative analytical solutions driving change in the current plastics industry. As a business developer, you are responsible for the following components:

  • Customer focus:
      • Develop a comprehensive understanding of essential customer requirements in the plastic recycling value chain: understand challenges the customer faces, the technical requirements for our products, and the value represented by our solution
      • Drive sales and develop relationships with potential customers
  • Sales strategies:
      • Help define product roadmaps that establish and enhance our competitive advantage

Requirements:

    • A relevant network in the plastic recycling value chain and a good understanding of the strategic needs toward the circular plastic transition
    • 5+ years of experience in a business development role, with a track record in business-to-business project development, building public-private partnerships and the ability to develop new propositions and sell ‘industry firsts’.
    • High sense of urgency and drive to deliver business results in a dynamic environment
    • Data-driven & logical communicator, strong analytical skills
    • Experience in working with a variety of stakeholders

As you can imagine, building this system and analysing the thermal spectra is extremely complex. With a multidisciplinary team we have taken the first big steps towards making this technology market ready and delivering the impact it will have. But some more work is required before we are there and a big part of that is in the data analysis. The unique thermal spectra provides us insight into many of the properties of the polymer, but the complexity of the polymer and its blends make it a challenge to get to high accuracy classification. Researching this subject within Veridis will provide you an interesting field to work in, where thermal physics, data analysis and polymer physics combine.

Experience
The ideal candidate has preferably more than X years of research experience in a complex high-tech environment, where he/she/they operated as a researcher who shaped and set out novel and inventive approaches and/or worked on complex problems at the edge of the field of knowledge. Hereby exploiting his/her/their expertise in previously mentioned fields of research.

As Marketing Intern you will be working in a multidisciplinary team on the realization of the go-to-market strategy. Within this internship you will be researching the effect of polymer mixing on their physical properties and in specific, their thermal properties. The focus will be a literature review on these effects, focussing on a small subset of polymers. This will require combining the information of different measurement methods and datasets. Even proposing and performing tests might be applicable in order to verify the assumptions or conclusions made. All this can also lead to a possible publication.

With our MADSCAN technology we scale up the sample size of a DSC by a factor 100.000. This allows us to give a representative analysis of large batches of plastics, thereby increasing the relevance to the recycling industry. Assignment Description
Within this internship you will be working on the thermal control system that will be integrated in the proof of concept and demonstrator of our product. This includes improving our control system model, writing the software and assembling the hardware. The goal is to improve our PID-based control system and transition to a model based control system. For example, feed forward control or model predictive control, but determining this is also part of the assignment. The thermal control system is of critical importance to the MADSCAN technology to get relevant results. The control system software can be directly implemented in practice in the proof of concept to optimize this for practical application. Next to that, the output of the control system will be analysed and used for our data analysis to determine the plastic sample properties.

Proposals outlined:

  • Digital systems integration
    In this internship you’ll look into how to properly couple and integrate our control and measurement systems (additionally also perhaps the interface with our analysis system), and create a simple graphical user interface to handle and control the system. This includes creating a PCB for our control system hardware and assessing and selecting a proper microcontroller unit(MCU) and writing the SPI code for the readout system. Next to this you can dive into the data processing and create a system for real-time readout plotting. If you have any other ideas you are free to work these out if possible.

Projects for a later date:

  • Data Science
    For data science there are several options. Firstly, the data produced by measurements needs to be manipulated and analyzed (plotting, bias and thermal lag corrections, baseline determination, material type separation and calculating various sample properties). Secondly, simulations and modeling of the DSC device is important to make decisions regarding design and system requirements. Also to get a first indication of the data we can expect from the initial tests. Thirdly, the data analysis should be automated and consistent to provide rapid results to the user without interference.

 

  • Power Supply
    Our instrument has quite a high power demand (in the order of 10kW), this gives us some challenges regarding the design of the power supply of all the elements. Especially as the demands of the subsystems vary widely. The sensor readout system uses low voltages in the range of 1.8V - 15V with high precision requirements, while heating elements could use up to 3kW. This also means that the control system requires several changes to handle the higher power load. 
  • EMC compatibility of the full system
    The instrument will be a sensitive measurement DSC-system and will be used in an industrial setting, this means the whole system will have to implement several techniques to limit EMI and EMS that might affect the measurements.
  • Digital Lock-in Amplifier system
    In our system we need to read out our temperature sensors very accurately for an absolute temperature measurement. To realise this we are currently using a sigma-delta adc coupled to a microcontroller unit (MCU). The next step is to integrate a lock-in amplifier system into this setup. We currently have a complete analog design for this, however several components work better in the digital domain. In this internship you will carry out these improvements and find other ways to improve on this part of the system.

Within this internship you will be working on a semi-analytical model used to analyse MADSCAN data in an innovative way. You will be expanding the current model by introducing material property effects, using new ways to extract more data as well as improving the performance of the model. There is also room to introduce an improved or new theoretical basis for the analysis. A lot of the work will evolve around partial differential equations due to the thermal nature of the problem. All the theoretical work can be compared to simulation and potentially real system measurements for validation and improvement.

As a mechanical engineer you will be working in a multidisciplinary team on the design and the realisation of the proof of concept and prototype. This will be used by industry partners and customers. The engineering development will mainly focus on research/feasibility, the design and (possibly) manufacturing of a closed nitrogen based flushing system to create an inert atmosphere in the sample chambers and how to fit this together with the rest of the system. Since a startup is an incredibly dynamic environment there will be any number of challenges that will allow you to learn and contribute in different ways as well.

DSC can be used to analyse plastics/polymers to give a material characterisation (material type, degradation, etc.). With our MADSCAN technology we scale up the sample size of a DSC by a factor 100.000. This allows us to give a representative analysis of large batches of plastics, thereby increasing the relevance to the recycling industry. Assignment Description
Within this internship you will be working on a variety of problems connected to the proof of concept and demonstrator of our product. The main focus will be on performing heat transfer simulations in COMSOL. These simulations are aimed at better understanding the thermal response of the detector and will be used to make appropriate design and material choices. Next to that, the resulting output of the simulations on different types of polymers need to be analysed in order to determine the needed sensor sensitivity, heating requirements, material property analysis and much more.

This internship assignment will allow you to have an impact on the improvement of plastic recycling and therefore on the circular transition as a whole. Because of the multidisciplinary start-up environment you will learn a lot from different disciplines. And most importantly, you will develop your simulation and research skills a lot by working independently on a challenging project with the rest of the team to give unique insights to help you. Finally, if the internship works out well we are always interested to consider extending your stay with us or even taking you on board as an employee.

With our MADSCAN technology, we scale up the sample size of a thermal analysis by a factor of 100.000, which allows us to give a representative analysis of large batches of plastics, thereby increasing the relevance to the recycling industry. With this method, we can analyse dark plastics, detect material degradation, and, most importantly, directly improve recycled plastics’ commercial value.

Assignment Description
In this internship, you will be working on denoising the system temperature signal, forming the link between the raw system output and the analysis software in the MADSCAN technology using a (total variation) regularisation approach. Thermal processes are inherently noisy, and we want to extract as much information from the system signal as possible. To make sure there are no small impurities that can affect the end quality of recycled plastics. Or, if there are any impurities, make sure that we can detect them in our analysis.  

This internship assignment will allow you to impact the improvement of plastic recycling and, therefore, the circular transition as a whole. Within this internship you will be working on a variety of problems connected to the data analysis of the proof of concept of our product. The main focus will be on research and customer driven data analysis of the thermal spectrum of polymers. The challenge can be approached from different angles: COMSOL simulation in order to better understand the system response, experimental verification of signal behaviour, data deconvolution using a mathematical model, etc. The data analysis is primarily done using Python. The assignment may also include customer interaction and collaboration.
