Veridis wants to create a better future for humanity and the planet. Our mission is to deliver key recycling technologies to advance the transition to a circular economy. We are trying to create a place of work where scientists and engineers can develop technical opportunities to benefit society and the climate. To achieve these objectives, we offer a challenging position with flexible working hours, an informal atmosphere, and a lot of independence and responsibility.

Veridis is a deep-tech startup developing a new system to improve quality control in plastic recycling: MAssive DSC ANalysis (MADSCAN). This technology is a new thermal analysis method that recyclers can use to analyse plastics/polymers to give the material characteristics (type, degradation, etc.). With our MADSCAN technology, we scale up the sample size of a thermal analysis by a factor of 100.000, which allows us to give a representative analysis of large batches of plastics, thereby increasing the relevance to the recycling industry. With this method, we can analyse dark plastics, detect material degradation, and, most importantly, directly improve recycled plastics’ commercial value.

As you can imagine, building this system and analysing the thermal spectra is extremely complex. With a multidisciplinary team we have taken the first big steps towards making this technology market ready and delivering the impact it will have. But some more work is required before we are there and a big part of that is in the data analysis. The unique thermal spectra provides us insight into many of the properties of the polymer, but the complexity of the polymer and its blends make it a challenge to get to high accuracy classification. Researching this subject within Veridis will provide you an interesting field to work in, where thermal physics, data analysis and polymer physics combine.

Experience
The ideal candidate has preferably more than five years of research experience in a complex high-tech environment, where he/she/they operated as a researcher who shaped and set out novel and inventive approaches and/or worked on complex problems at the edge of the field of knowledge. Hereby exploiting his/her/their expertise in previously mentioned fields of research.

Responsibilities

  • Improving the data analysis of the MADSCAN technology using
      • Analytical models
      • Thermal simulations
      • Data enhancement
      • And more
  • Developing and improving innovative techniques to perform data analysis on the thermal spectrum
  • Leading a small team with interns (and employees) to pursue the research goal of the company
  • Participate, contribute and/or set-up collaboration project with Universities, knowledge institutes and polymer (recycling) related companies or institutes
  • Help set up design-of-experiments for testing new analytical methods and analyse the resulting data
  • Find points of improvements or potential issues by analysing analysis performance
  • Support the team and customers in solving system performance issues related to the analysis

Requirements

  • Strong background in Physics, Mathematics or similar
  • Experience in coding with Python
  • Worked on research topics in non-academic/industrial environment
  • Expert in thermal (data analysis) research
  • Affinity with working in a startup
  • Working at least 60% of the time at company location
  • Able to follow a (self-made) planning without delay
  • The urge to solve complex challenges

Preferences

  • Experience with polymer science and/or engineering
  • Experience with coding in C++
  • Experience writing code up to industry standard
  • Experience in (thermal) simulation program e.g. COMSOL
  • Ideally knowledge of thermal analysis in general and interpretation of calorimetry results in particular

Please send your motivation letter, curriculum vitae (CV) and other potentially relevant documents to Floris Gerritsen, CSO of Veridis at fjagerritsen@veridis.tech.
