Veridis is an ambitious and lean startup that wants to make the world a better place by tackling climate change and environmental pollution. The company was founded with the ambition to create a better future for humanity and our planet. Our mission is to design and develop leading and innovative technologies to become the industry standard in complex material characterisation, impacting a circular economy for a sustainable future.

Veridis is a deep-tech startup developing a new system to enhance insight into plastic recycling streams, the MADSCAN system. This technology is a unique thermal analysis method that recyclers can use to analyse plastics/polymers to give the material characteristics (type, fractions, etc.).

We are preparing for the initial market introduction of the first product, the MADSCAN S-50. As an early-stage start-up entering the scale up phase with plenty of potential, we are offering huge opportunities to learn, grow and take on lots of critical responsibility.

As you can imagine, building the MADSCAN and analysing the thermal spectra is extremely complex. With a multidisciplinary team we have taken the first big steps towards making this technology market ready and delivering the impact it will have. The unique thermal spectra provides us insight into many of the properties of the polymer, but the complexity of the polymer and its blends make it a challenge to get to high accuracy classification. Researching this subject within Veridis will provide you an interesting field to work in, where thermal physics, complex data analysis and polymer physics combine.

Experience
The ideal candidate has preferably more than 5 years of research experience in a complex high-tech environment, where he/she/they operated as a researcher who shaped and set out novel and inventive approaches and/or worked on complex problems at the edge of the field of knowledge. Hereby exploiting his/her/their expertise in previously mentioned fields of research.

Responsibilities

  • Improving the data analysis of the MADSCAN technology using for example
    • Thermo-Analytical models
    • Scientific data analysis methods
    • Thermal simulations
    • And more
  • Developing and improving innovative techniques to perform data analysis on the thermal spectrum
  • Support the team and customers in solving system performance issues related to the analysis

Requirements

  • Strong background in Physics, Mathematics or similar
  • Experience in coding with Python
  • Worked on research topics in non-academic/industrial environment
  • Expert in (thermal) data analysis research
  • Affinity with working in a startup
  • Able to follow a (self-made) planning
  • The urge to solve complex challenges

Preferences

  • Experience with polymer science and/or engineering
  • Experience with coding in C++
  • Experience writing code up to industry standard
  • Experience in (thermal) simulation program e.g. COMSOL
  • Ideally knowledge of thermal analysis in general and interpretation of calorimetry results in particular

Please send your motivation letter, curriculum vitae (CV) and other potentially relevant documents to Floris Gerritsen, CTO of Veridis at fjagerritsen@veridis.tech.

Company Information
Veridis has the ambitious goal to create a better future for humanity and the planet, our mission is to deliver key recycling technologies to advance the transition to a circular economy. We are trying to create a place of work where scientists and engineers can develop technical opportunities for the benefit of society and climate. To achieve these objectives we are offering an internship with flexible working hours, an informal atmosphere, and a lot of independence and responsibility.

Veridis is a deep-tech startup developing a new system to improve quality control in plastic recycling: MAssive DSC ANalysis (MADSCAN). This technology is a new thermal analysis method that recyclers can use to analyse plastics/polymers to give the material characteristics (type, degradation, etc.). With our MADSCAN technology, we scale up the sample size of a thermal analysis by a factor of 100.000, which allows us to give a representative analysis of large batches of plastics, thereby increasing the relevance to the recycling industry. With this method, we can analyse dark plastics, detect material degradation, and, most importantly, directly improve recycled plastics’ commercial value.

Assignment Description
Within this internship you will be researching the effect of polymer mixing on their physical properties and in specific, their thermal properties. The focus will be a literature review on these effects, focussing on a small subset of polymers. This will require combining the information of different measurement methods and datasets. Even proposing and performing tests might be applicable in order to verify the assumptions or conclusions made. All this can also lead to a possible publication.

This internship assignment will allow you to impact the improvement of plastic recycling and, therefore, the circular transition as a whole. Because of the multidisciplinary start-up environment, you will learn a lot from different disciplines. And most importantly, you will develop your research skills a lot by working independently on a challenging project with the rest of the team to give unique insights to help you. Intern Profile
You are a creative and curious person who is not afraid of a challenge and working with complex literature that seems overwhelming at first. You like taking initiative and contributing new ideas or research directions. You have high standards with the ability to dive deep, critically evaluate the work of yourself and others, and relate the research you are performing to the MADSCAN system output. You can condense state-of-the-art papers at an academic level and extract relevant conclusions from those.

Requirements:
Currently enrolled in or having acquired a MSc student in (Applied) Physics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or anything related to those.

Preferences (not requirements):
• Basic knowledge of polymer science
Experience with thermal analysis methods
