How Veridis’ MADSCAN® technology can help your business meet PPWR requirements
On February 11th, the EU PPWR regulation entered into force. This is a major step towards a circular (plastics) economy with various levels of requirements to be met in the coming years.
With these requirements, there are also some challenges to overcome. Challenges where our MADSCAN® technology can provide a solution to meet these regulatory requirements on time and consistently.
The MADSCAN® technology helps the European recycling industry with the following concerning the PPWR:
- Minimum Recycled Content Quotas for packaging:
Single-use plastic beverage bottles: 30% by 2030; 65% by 2040
Contact-sensitive packaging (primarily PET): 30% by 2030; 50% by 2040
Contact-sensitive packaging (other plastics): 10% by 2030; 25% by 2040
Other plastic packaging: 35% by 2030; 65% by 2040
Incorporating more recyclate into end-products is a great goal but also requires reliable insight into the composition of mixed waste streams. PP impurities in HDPE, unknown LDPE/LLDPE ratios or the presence of PVC in a PCR stream impact the material properties, production processes, or even whether a material is safe to use for a specific product.
With MADSCAN®, Veridis enables reliable and industry-scale insight into the exact composition of both Post Industrial Reclate (PIR) and Post Consumer recyclate (PCR) streams so that quality can be proven and certainties can be given to converters aiming to meet these recycled content quotas. - Stricter traceability and Quality reporting requirements:
The PPWR will require packaging manufacturers to issue a declaration of conformity for packaging before placing it on the market. That declaration requires an assessment that the packaging complies with Art. 5-12 PPWR (Art. 15, 39 PPWR). The declaration must follow a specific format and content and must be kept and provided to authorities upon request for 5 years after placing single-use packaging on the market and 10 years after reusable packaging is placed on the market.
MADSCAN® ensures quality and traceability, results are up to 99% accurate in determining the polymer types and fraction sizes and are always available in the online MADSCAN® customer portal where they can be downloaded and compared with other material (streams) from any of your facilities.
With this portal & MADSCAN®, Veridis ensures that material data cannot be lost and is readily available to be used in your declarations of conformity from any location.
